Sustainably Farmed Wines and Cider Handcrafted in Pemberton

At Mountford Wines, we make consciously crafted wines and cider that nurture the environment. Minimal intervention and preservatives, maximum flavour and experience.

The Mountford family handpicked Pemberton for its unique flavour potential, cool climate and pristine forest. As early pioneers of the wine industry in the South-West of Western Australia, we are still proud to preserve the distinct essence of the region 35 years later and grow, make and bottle its taste and story into an authentic, artisan brand.

Family-owned and operated, our
award-winning cellar door is open for lovers of fine wine and quality local produce.

Why Choose Mountford Wines in Pemberton?

Mountford Wines is one of the oldest wineries in Pemberton and Tangletoe was the first cidery in Western Australia. In 1987, husband and wife duo Andrew and Sue Mountford established the six-hectare piece of land with one mission - to handcraft deliciously complex organic products that combine wine science with sustainable living.

After three years of extensive research to analyse the soil, rainfall and grapes, the cellar door was lovingly crafted by hand using the raw materials found onsite. Mountford Wines is one of the few wineries in the region that use natural techniques with carbon-positive, sustainable production and certified organic wines and cider.

The Mountford Wines and Tangletoe Cidery difference:

  • Low yields enhance the flavours of the grapes by allowing them to fully develop

  • Dry grown grapes vs irrigation, which produce smaller crops and high-intensity fruit flavours recognisable in our products

  • Natural pest/weed control and fertiliser from our vineyard chickens who are free to roam

It is our vision to create a space for you to drink fine wine. That fine wine, we believe, should uphold the integrity of the fruit and the place where it's grown to enhance the quality of taste you experience.

Sustainability has always been a way of life for Mountford Wines. As authentic winemakers skilled in organic farming, it was essential for us to build a space and growing system that has minimal impact on the environment, while forging unforgettable experiences. This is evident from our cellar door winery to our organic products.

We constructed the building from mud brick and recycled timber. It took two years to build by hand, fuelled by creativity, sustainable philosophies and many bottles of wine. Renowned for its exquisite beauty and natural materials, it serves as a cellar door and winery, an art gallery, venue space and most importantly - a place to taste, tell stories and create memories. In 1995 our building efforts were nationally recognised with the Sir David Brand Award for Tourist Development Project.

Our cellar door is open Friday to Monday for tastings and sales 10 am to 4 pm, and 7 days a week during the school holidays.

Similar to a hobbit house, which embodies the simple pleasures of life, our cellar door is cosy, soothing and handbuilt in stunning scenery. The building features curved-framed views and architectural details that bring the winery to life. We are the only cellar door in the region with an organic working winery and vineyard.

Kind Words from Customers

Great ciders from non alcoholic to alcoholic & sparkling.
Lovely gallery & history in a beautiful setting.
Winery gate is on a back road. We saw the sign so drove in. Just a gateway - not a big brick corporate gateway. We prefer finding these hidden back road gems. Lovely warm welcome & offers of tasting.
We walked away with a variety of ciders, honey & cheese and will be back!
