Mountford Gallery

In 1994 Mountford Gallery was officially opened with an exhibition by John Austin. Over the years many artists have exhibited at Mountford Gallery, some of these include Bob Birch, Mac Betts, Averyle Shilkin, Barbara Bennett, Leon Pericles, Joy Henderson and Greg Crowe.

Such has been the success of these exhibitions that some of the artists have been happy to hold a second and sometimes third exhibition of their latest works.

Current exhibitions:

We begin this New Year in the Gallery with a look back!  We are remembering our old acquaintances, with an exhibition which is a compilation of some our favourite artists.

John Austin, well known West Australian photographic artist was our inaugural artist in the mezzanine gallery. Originally from Stugumber in Somerset England, John has fallen for our local landscape and especially the native Karri Forest. A long time environmentalist his work has detailed the beautiful and sometimes controversial sides of our region. This present work “Nel in the canopy from 2005 shows Johns’ talent in form, texture and light . Nel Simpson an aerial artist is captured by him while delicately performing in the Karri Forest canopy, some 50 metres above the forest floor.

Sieglinde Battley, we have three works by Seiglinde. Two are studies on the humble Poppy. A great subject for her, the colours burst out of the frame with such precise charm and aplomb, lovely work that bewitches the eye. The third piece is from a much earlier period of Seiglindes’ life, “Camels on Cable Beach” a larger work that depicts the life and love, of this Australian icon. Full of her wonderful sense of colour both literal and metaphorical.

Martin Cropper, water colours from this artist have to be seen to be believed. The seemingly casual subject matter belies the serious nature of Martins’ work. Bikes are painted, discarded by children on a hot afternoon, next to the super-six fence, amongst the leaves and other debris. The precision and mastery he has accomplished over his years of work is truly remarkable.

Roger Garwood, from French news magazine to freelance work for the National Geographic. Roger
has seen much to of the commercial photographic world. Here he explores the waterways of the South-West. The moods of the rivers are captured, from the swollen Blackwood to serene Moons’ Crossing and the turbulent cascades of the Warren. These fine black and white images will forever live in that moment, when they were shot recording a split second of time and recording a memory to treasure.

Please take your time to wonder through our gallery,
savour this lovely collection of works, we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed collecting them.
